Angola
The Angola programme was awarded the PMI/USAID – Private Sector Case management pilot study in Huambo, Angola. The project is a new step for MENTOR who are working with Novartis, the NMCP, and a marketing and branding expert to “overbrand” Coartem¨ blister packs for the private sector. It is an exciting new venture for MENTOR as its team expands in its area of expertise and operations. This complements its existing programme in Huambo Province and its ongoing work in the north of the country in Mbanza Congo..

Chad
The Southern Chad programme continues its third year of malaria control work under BPRM for the CAR refugees residing in Gore. The situation in Northern CAR remains volatile and the southern programme saw an influx of over 10 000 refugees in 2008.
The Eastern Chad programme has transitioned from providing direct support to the health district of Dar Sila to scaling up support to all Health and WATSAN partner agencies working in Eastern Cahd. After three years in Dar Sila its efforts saw malaria consultations drop from 22% of the health system burden in 2006 to less than 4% in 2009. With funding from OFDA and BPRM it is working with partners to replicate these achievements in all of Eastern Chad with training and support on both malaria case management and prevention.

Kenya
The MENTOR Initiative has been working in the North Eastern province in Kenya since 2006, in partnership with the National Division of Malaria Control (DOMC). Early programmes were short-term and focused on emergency malaria control responses to seasonal flooding. Due to the recurring nature of these emergencies and the low capacity low capacity of the MOH to adequately detect epidemics in a reasonable amount of time, it bacame quickly apparent that short-term, reactive programming was not the solution to adequately controlling malaria in the province. In order to ensure an appropriate, pro-active emergency intervention when floods and concomitant malaria epidemics occur. The MENTOR Initiative developed a comprehensive 4 year malaria control programme in collaboration with Comic Relief which began in January 2010. The goals of this programme are to: 1) Build the capacity of the MoH to better identity and respond to malaria epidemics, 2) Increase the capacity of healthcare workers to manage suspected cases of malaria; and 3) Increase awareness of the population regarding malaria and equip them with appropriate malaria prevention tools.

This funding complements another three years of programme through OFDA/USAID on Epidemiological Surveillance of malaria, trainings in Malaria Case Management and Malaria in Pregnancy, and Operational Research to monitor progress and assess effectiveness of malaria interventions. In Sinoe County located in the east of the country, a malaria control programme funded by ECHO through a joint collaboration with MERLIN has just ended.
